On August 19, 2020, the Government of Costa Rica announced the gradual opening of the country´s air borders for six states of the United States. as of September 1. Only residents of the following states may enter:

• New York
• New Jersey
• New Hampshire
• Maine
• Vermont
• Connecticut

The entry of travelers to Costa Rica from these states will have several mandatory requirements:

1. Demonstrating, with a driver's license, that the traveler resides in one of the six permitted states.
2. Showing a negative result of the COVID-19 test, obtained in the 48 hours prior to the trip.
3. Completing an epidemiological digital form that the Costa Rican Social Security Administration (CCSS) will provide, available in different languages.
4. Obtaining travel insurance that covers quarantine accommodation and medical expenses for acute illness.

If a traveler does not meet these requirements, they will not be able to travel to Costa Rica.

Private flights from the United States will be allowed and must meet the aforementioned requirements. If the travelers arrive from an unauthorized state or country, each case will be analyzed via an exception mechanism, on a case-by-case basis.

Private yachts may also enter the country. If the travelers do not bring the negative PCR test with them, or if they set sail from a city or country that has not been authorized until now, they will receive a quarantine health order counted as of the day when they set sea. These days will be deducted from the last departure that is registered in the yacht's logbook.

Land borders will continue to be closed.
